What is it and why do I need it?

Time theft is one of the biggest profit killers to a business. Susceptible to fraud, traditional time and attendance monitoring systems such as punch cards, swipe cards and the manual logging of work hours can see employers paying wages for hours not worked or to people not physically present for the shift, but these individuals have been logged in by a friend or colleague (Buddy punching). Consequently, businesses are increasingly turning to biometric technology. Biometric data is nearly impossible to fake so it is seen as the most reliable way of identifying an individual. Using biometric markers in order to authenticate attendance and to track employees for security purposes is both prudent and often necessary to protect all parties from imposters and fraudulent representation.

Identity management using biometrics involves the use of automated systems to analyse an individual’s different behaviour traits or physical attributes

There are many alternative options for capturing the unique biological identifiers of an individual. Biometric identification can use fingerprints, full body geometry, retina scans, voice and increasingly, facial recognition. Virtually impossible to forge, and when combined with a well-designed biometric identifying tool, solutions of this type provide exceptional return on investment.

Providing exceptional levels of security, Innovise recommend both fingerprint and facial recognition technology. Both are very commonplace domestically, and both are at the forefront of biometric identification reliability.

How do they work?

Like Fingerprints, Face Recognition is a great way to identify. Both technology use unique patterns to make sure an individual is who they say they are.

Every face is different; the size of the eyes, the fullness of the lips, the length of the jaw - the sum of which distinguishes one person from another (even in the case of identical twins). When an employee enrols on the system, the face reader scans their face, then processes their biometric features via a proprietary mathematical algorithm, populating an on-board database. Subsequent scanning compares the scanned features to this database to identify the employee. A facial recognition system leaves absolutely no doubt on the identification of the person that is being tracked, monitored or admitted.

Timegate and ‘FaceID’: The Perfect Partnership

A collaboration of two industry leading biometric and workforce management solutions, the integration of best in class FaceID biometric technology into Timegate’s award winning  technology provides the next level of choice for Innovise customers. Providing the very latest in biometric technological advancement to streamline business intelligence and analytics, Timegate users can now enjoy the many benefits that this new era of Time & Attendance capture delivers.

FaceID devices provide a secure, auditable biometric alternative to passwords, PINs and RFID cards. FaceID cannot be spoofed by fake faces, dummies or photographs and the Dual SensorTM technology provides 3D image performance. When considering face recognition technologies, it is important to recognise that not all solutions are ‘spoof proof’ and great care should be taken to ascertain if you have reliable, secure technology.

The New Normal

A recognisable technology from its usage in social media the latest smartphones, tablets and PCs, face recognition technology has moved from being an expensive option to being a cost effective and expected means of identification. Faster, much more accurate and intuitive to use, the patented dual sensor technology provided by FaceID is cutting-edge. Using two on-board cameras and a dedicated DSP chip, FaceID provides the richness and accuracy of 3D face recognition but at the high speeds associated with 2D recognition (a less reliable option). The end result of this is a highly accurate identification, in a fraction of a second.

The Efficiencies

Time Saving:

FaceID has a typical recognition speed of less than 1 second, which is best in class and faster than most other biometric methods. As an alternative to the use of Timesheets, phone systems, Fingerprint readers and swipe technologies, a FaceID system does not trigger queues at the clocking in/out point and nor does it require manual processes to audit personnel. This drives up satisfaction for front line employees (who are then doing minimal administration), but it also increases satisfaction amongst supervisors and management who are not only sure of the correct personnel on site, but can also confirm this to clients alike who will also have concerns from time to time. Removing administration and laborious audits of personnel is a material time saving.

Moreover, payroll data is accurate. The lag or queues noted above are no more. The employee can be clocked in or out within a second of reaching the official booking point. There can be no argument about having to wait x minutes when they should have been working. There cannot be any buddy punching causing a delta between the time a client says the employee turned up or left, and when the clocking in or out time occurred. Time savings are real.

Accuracy therefore Security:

Many customers are increasingly concerned by Security. Having the correctly trained, approved operatives on site, who may have been thoroughly background checked or vetted is important. FaceID scans over 6000 data points to achieve highly accurate user identification. It is practically impossible to fool the system, so you can feel secure knowing that Timegate, together with FaceID technology will be successful at tracking time and attendance while providing better security.

Usability:

Whereas other recognition systems can be affected by temporary factors, 3D face identification tends not to be; Cataracts and eye infections for Retina, wet skin, excessively dry skin or damaged fingerprints (as is the case for many manual workers) for Fingerprints, 3D facial recognition technology as offered by FaceID, is not compromised by these factors. Unsurprisingly, FaceID is compatible with 99.999% of the population.

Hygiene:

Furthermore, FaceID devices require no physical contact, which makes them more hygienic than other biometric devices that require touch or close proximity for operation. FaceID remains effective in low-light and bright light environments and it allows staff to stand up to a metre away from the camera. It is this reliability, and the great speed advantage, that is seeing companies increasingly turning to face recognition as their biometric technology of choice.

Designed and built to be safe and easy to use, Timegate integrated with FaceID is an automated system, so as well as avoiding excessive training, you won’t have to worry about sending engineers to site on a regular basis.

Convenience:

There is nothing more convenient than using FaceID.  There’s never the worry of the technology being inaccessible because of a forgotten swipe card, as quite simply, you cannot forget your face! Simply look into the camera of a FaceID reader and the job is done.

Economical:

While the actual cost of swipe card / badge readers is relatively inexpensive, the ongoing cost of replacing cards, badges and fobs can be high over a year. As FaceID biometric technology has no associated consumables and extremely high product reliability rates, the total cost of ownership becomes a compelling alternative.

By combining the benefits of FaceID and Timegate, Innovise customers can bolster their bottom line, minimise the requirement for administration overhead and give their managers peace of mind around security, allowing them to focus on deploying their workforce more effectively when and where the business needs it.
